2019/2020 Scholarship Application for Post-Secondary School Students (Open)

The Vancouver Korean-Canadian Scholarship Foundation (VKCSF) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing scholarships to qualified students with Korean heritage or to those pursuing academic fields related to Korea. VKCSF encourages students to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of the Korean-Canadian community and the wider Canadian society.

VKCSF will award scholarships to students who demonstrate the following:

1. Excellence in academic or vocational training;
2. Active involvement in a community and/or other notable extracurricular activities; and/or
3. Financial need*

Please note that the above criteria are weighted equally. *if there’s no financial need, criteria #1 and criteria #2 will be considered.

Who Can Apply?

►Anyone who is a resident of Greater Vancouver (Canadian citizens or permanent residents) of Korean heritage who is enrolled as a full-time student (September 2019/April 2020) at (i) an accredited post-secondary institution in province of British Columbia or (ii) an accredited post-secondary institution outside of the province of British Columbia, if he or she graduated from a secondary school in the Greater Vancouver area and has a parent who resides in Greater Vancouver;

►an international student of Korean heritage, who will be attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the Greater Vancouver area; or

►a Non-Korean heritage student, who will be attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the province of British Columbia and is pursuing academic studies related to Korea.

WHAT to submit?

The application package consists of the following:

  1. Personal Information Form
  2. One passport-size color photo:
    • If you are awarded a scholarship, this photograph will be used in our Awards Ceremony Program and posted on the VKCSF Website. Please ensure that the photograph is passport-styled, and of sufficient quality for printing. School portraits are acceptable.
  3. One essay (maximum 500 words in length, double-spaced, font size 12) on a topic from below, describing your dream and/or vision in answering specifically to questions:
    • What kind of a person do you want to be in 20 years?;
    • To achieve your vision, what have you done and plan to do hereon?
    • (Please answer both questions above in same essay)
  4. Copies of your academic transcripts that encompass all post-secondary school years (up to the date of application).
    • First-year students: University and all high school year official transcripts.
    • Grade 12 students: All high school year official transcripts and the acceptance letter from the post-secondary institution.
  5. A letter outlining your current financial circumstances (maximum 250 words)
  6. A copy of parent(s)’ and the applicant’s Notice of Assessment for tax year 2018, if financial need is being considered
  7. One reference letter to be provided from an academic reference (by email)

WHERE to submit your application package?

  • Please note that your application package must be submitted electronically via a single email (with exception of the sealed official academic transcript(s) and academic reference letter).

  • Application Deadline: Friday, May 31st, 2019 at 11:59PM

    *Please note that application packages stamped after June 1st, 2019 will NOT be considered.

    All selected candidates will be individually notified by July 10th, 2019. Upon the notification, the following two items MUST be submitted to VKCSF via email at vkcsfinfo@gmail.com by July 17th, 2019 for the official announcement in local Korean newspapers:
    1. Remarks on receiving the scholarship, to be published in the awards ceremony program booklet and on the VKCSF website (maximum 50 words); and

    2. Thank you letter to the donor
    *Please note that if the above items are not received by the indicated date (July 17th, 2019), the potential candidate will be disqualified from further consideration..

    2019 VKCSF Scholarship Award Ceremony

    To receive the scholarship, you or your representative MUST attend the ceremony. The awards will be given in person only at the ceremony.

    • Date: Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm (reception starts at 5:30pm)
    • Place: Hilton Vancouver Metrotown (6083 McKay Avenue Burnaby, BC V5H 2W7)

For pre-authorized direct donation, please send us a void cheque and your contact information. A donation s little as $10 can go a long way in nurturing our future generation. Tax receipts will be issued for the donations over $20.
